Lost

I don't know what to say . I'm confused , sad , tired and I'd like to scream maybe i'll feel better . I hate this week because it was full of emotion and I had to say goodbye to my good friend Ramona and also to Ines but at least she's staying here in London . We can meet but for Ramona it's impossible cause she went to France . I have many things in my mind right now concerning my future life and I hate thinking too much about that.
It's better for me to react ; I need a push for sure .
For holiday , I have to study , to organize my self and also to go out because I hate staying at home the whole week .
I need a fresh air maybe I'll go somewhere with Noussa but it's not going to be the same cause Rami won't be with us .
Hope she will manage to be here with us for the New Year .

The essay outline

The Introduction

The use of surveillance has dramatically increased in the UK since 1994 .
Since this time , the surveillance has played a leading role to prevent every form of crimes . It is estimated that five hundred thousand CCTV cameras operate within London ; this means there is one camera for every fourteen people ( McCahill and Norris 2006 ) .
It was an urgent need for the UK to deal with the issue of crime especially after the fall out from September eleven and 7/7 London Tube attacks . And talking about the surveillance society , there was a divergence opinion concerning its role on society and to what extent do people benefit from it . Some claimed that the advantages of the surveillance society far outweigh the drawbacks , others think the opposite .
This essay will look at both sizes of argument and try to get a conclusion .

Paragraph 1 : The advantage of the surveillance society : to detect and reduce crimes ( violence , vandalism )

Paragraph 2 : The disadvantage of the surveillance society : has invaded our privacy ( people 's action were increasingly being monitored )

Paragraph 3 : The advantage of the surveillance society : It has led to many terrorists being imprisoned ( CCTV )

Paragraph 4 : The disadvantage of the Surveillance society

According to the Court of Human Rights , over 850, 000 people were suspected of crimes but they were cleared later .
They were marginated , humiliated and discriminated ; the police had caught many innocent people and treated them the same way they treat the criminals which is unfair . The fact that pushed The Court Of Human Rights to interfere especially after hearing that the police still keep their DNA on file so they rejected this act and considered that it breaches human rights .
So they were forced to destroy the DNA details of hundred of thousand of people .

How it can be possible that the surveillance society which is supposed to detect crimes , catch criminals was responsible of suspecting innocent people .

Conclusion :

As we can see there is a balance between the both size the advantages and the disadvantages .

Please help me !!!!!!

Last week , I was wondering about how to improve my English speaking .

It is an urgent need for me to improve my speaking because I want to work in an international company which require a high standard of English level .
That's why , I asked Steve for help ; he recommended me some books to read .

I also had an interesting conversation with my classmate Jenny .
We shared some thought and I told her that I 'm worried about my speaking cause I feel that my English did not improve it still the same .

She suggested some books such as Atonement by Ian McEwan ......

She also asked me to join her someday to meet her friends who are a native speaker so I can practise with them .

I Had also enjoyed the BBC World Service site for learning English because it's a blog in which people from different countries can share some ideas and thoughts the point is to improve their English .
Besides , I'm reading a book right now called Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho .

hopefully , It will help me for my English but I think the most important thing is to push yourself to speak and not be afraid to make a mistake because it's normal for us as it's not our first language but with practises it will be useful for us .

To be continued ....

some reflections about the last seminar

I liked the second seminar about crimes not because of the topic but because we shared some thought and everything was well organised .

Everybody participated and expressed his own opinion ; we had a discussion about the surveillance society and to what extent do we agree with it .

In fact , we started the seminar by comparing our surveillance society in our countries with London .
We found some similarities that is to say that we agreed that in our countries we used the identity cards and some CCTV in shops .

However , we noticed that here in London , the government had placed a different and various forms of surveillance technology such as Monitoring , identity cards , databases , CCTV ....

The second part of the seminar was focused on our point of view ; whether we are for or against these forms of surveillance .

Well the majority of us think that the surveillance society is a good way to prevent such form of crimes like violence , vandalism ......

But some think that this new form of technology can interfere in our private life .

Modal verbs

The day of Vicky's murder , I was working but I can remember that when I coming home I noticed that Peter was weird ; he was calm because normally we used to argue everyday .

He was asking for money to buy alcohol or cigar so I thought that something wrong may have happened but I did not know what to do : shall I ask him knowing his bad mood but I could not retain myself so I asked him if he is OK or not but he did not answer me which is quit bizarre .

Because normally he used to shout at me but that day everything was different and now I can see that he might have enjoyed torturing , raping and killing the poor girl as if he felt relieved I know it is insane but for him it is a kind of relief, a satisfaction .

Today , I feel alive but foremost free because I get rid of him I mean I can walk and enjoy a normal life knowing that he can't hurt me anymore even though I should have taken a stand and divorce him but It was not easy for me because I was scared of him .

Now I fell strong and can manage my life and I have to move on and afford a better life for my son .

Common stereotype

In the American TV series , man is always depicted as a handsome person with a beautiful body , a rich businessman that all women are in love with ; he can get every woman that he wants he is like Casanova or Don Juan Di Marco .....

We have an example of that kind of man like the character of Victor Newman in the one of the famous American Soap Opera The Yong And The Restless . In fact , he is an outstanding personality , he is powerful , rich, handsome , a man's ladies who got married several times and everyone of his ex wants him back so it is like a competition to be continued.....

The media

In my country , we have 5 local channels and many international channels includes Italian, French and American channels .
In Tunisia , we are very open to the other cultures that' s why Tunisian people are keen about the International channels such as TF1 , FRANCE2, M6 , Rai1 , EUROSPORT.....

The kind of programme that people watch depends on each's preference for example women like soap opera especially Egyptian one ; my aunt for instance likes American soap opera called The Young And The Restless .

Men adore watching news or sport's programme like Eurosport , Jazira Sport , Rai Sport.......

Some like documentary such as Panorama , Envoye special , Capital.....

Others prefer TV series especially American TV series like Lost , Prison Break......

An article connected to the British media

Jonathan Ross's return to BBC hinges on the BBC Trust, Lyons tells MPs

Mark Thompson and Sir Michael Lyons

The BBC Trust chairman, Sir Michael Lyons, today expressed his displeasure at the corporation announcing a return date for Jonathan Ross to his Radio 2 show before the "Sachsgate" inquiry had been completed and published.

The BBC announced last week that Ross would return to Radio 2 on January 24. The BBC's highest paid TV and radio presenter was suspended without pay for three months in late October for his part in the Sachsgate affair.

However, Lyons indicated today that Ross's return was dependent on the BBC Trust's still-to-be-delivered final verdict on the prank calls made by Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross to the actor Andrew Sachs as part of Brand's radio show.

"Let me be clear the trust has not finished its deliberations. All of these matters are subject to the final decision," said Lyons, appearing before MPs on the Commons culture, media and sport select committee.

"There is nothing that has been ruled out from the final deliberations of the BBC Trust," he added.

Questioned by the committee's chairman, Conservative MP John Whittingdale, Lyons appeared to think that the January 24 date was merely the end of Ross's three-month suspension period.

However, the BBC announced the date of his Radio 2 return in a press release issued last week.

Whittingdale asked Lyons if it had been "premature" of the BBC to announce Ross's return, with the trust not due to publish its findings and final verdict on the Sachsgate affair until Friday November 21.

"There are many aspects of this affair that I would liked to have seen handled differently. I am sure in the last week [the BBC] has done a few things I wish it hadn't. It's a big organisation," the BBC Trust chairman replied.

However, following Lyons' appearance before the culture select committee today, the BBC Trust issued a further statement saying that it did not expect new information to emerge that would change its view on Ross's role in the Sachsgate affair or his suspension.

"The trust ratified BBC management's proposal to suspend Jonathan Ross for three months unpaid as an appropriate sanction after receiving the director general's interim report into events surrounding the Russell Brand show," the trust added.

"The trust will not pre-empt its own inquiry, but based on the oral updates it has received since October 30, it does not expect the director general's final report to provide new information of substance relating to Jonathan Ross's role which would lead it to change its view on his part in this incident."

Lyons told the select committee that he was "on alert" for further compliance issues in the wake of the Radio 2 phone prank row.

He also pointed the finger at senior radio executives within the corporation who did not know enough about the BBC's editorial guidelines.

He admitted the corporation had "crossed a boundary" by broadcasting pre-recorded lewd phone messages left by Ross and Brand on Sachs' answerphone.

"We are on alert as a result of this incident as to whether there have been specific problems of editorial control and compliance in audio and radio," Lyons told the select committee.

"This is where we have focused the director general [Mark Thompson] to do more work for us," he said.

"We have asked him to draw together all the senior editorial staff. There is evidence here of senior members of staff not being clear what falls outside of editorial controls.

"I am absolutely clear there are important issues here. The trust wants to be surgical, that's the only way we are going to bring about change to give us all confidence for the future."

Lyons, who appeared before MPs with Thompson, admitted there were "lessons to be learned [from the affair] in our press handling in the future".

However, he denied the corporation had reacted slowly to the problem - even though it was more than a week after the broadcast, and more than 24 hours after the Mail on Sunday splashed on the story, before the BBC issued any sort of apology. "As soon as the BBC became aware of it, it was dealt with," Lyons said.

Thompson said: "I am very aware that this was a very serious editorial lapse. There were errors in judgment."

The broadcast on Brand's Radio 2 show generated 42,000 complaints and led to the resignations of both Brand and the Radio 2 controller, Lesley Douglas. Ross was suspended without pay for three months.

Thompson denied the affair was evidence of a systemic breakdown in the corporation's compliance procedures, which he overhauled in the wake of a string of viewer deception scandals involving BBC TV and radio shows last year.

"The scale of the BBC's operations … means there will sometimes be human error, it's the nature of any human activity," the director general said.

Thompson also denied there had been a period of weakening of compliance across the corporation, saying it had made "enormous progress".

He said the BBC's editorial guidelines were "far more central to [the BBC's operations] than they were five years ago".

"That is not to say we would not learn lessons from individual serious lapses. You cannot have this scale of TV and radio broadcasting and not expect that sometimes we will get it wrong. There is much the BBC gets right," Thompson added.

"This is a very uncharacteristic, utterly unacceptable but genuinely exceptional lapse. It is not typical of the BBC or the way our compliance system works."

Lyons twice highlighted concerns over compliance issues within BBC radio – previously overseen by Jenny Abramsky and now under the charge of the BBC director of audio and music, Tim Davie – rather than its television output.

"We need to be focused particularly in audio and music. That is where the director general is focused," Lyons told MPs.

And Lyons and Thompson once again defended the reported £6m annual salary paid to Ross.

Conservative MP Nigel Evans said he had not come across a single person who thought Ross was worth such a pay packet.

Evans added that Thompson and Lyons were "out of touch" with the British public.

Introduction to vocabulary acquirement

I liked the course today , because it was very interesting .
We saw a new words , a new vocabulary with Steven such as to have exposure , to be in the limelight , not a scrap of , convincing evidence , vicious , shallow , aquisitive ....

We had a discussion about how to acquire the vocabulary we need for our studies .
Some said that reading is a best way to ameliorate our speech ... Others claimed that the cultural influence like TV , metro ... could help us to improve our speaking as well as our writing .

Cooperative learning

I like this text because it shows us how to work as a group , and what are the key factors of making this cooperation useful for us as a group .

Infact , it may contributes to improve our standard of writing or speaking ; it is a positive process that helps us to reach a high academic level .

How is that ?

It is through a cooperative methods and a positive relationships among team members of different racial and economic backgrounds .

They may share the same or similar thoughts or goals and each one of them have to focus on one subject /issue , and then they can discuss their works or researches and trying to find a compromise .

They have to be open to a new idea , have to be a good listener and to push each other to work harder ; it is like a challenge ( to encourage each other to do better ) .

The catering service at London Metropolitan University

Background

Over the past few years, the British media focused on the healthy eating in the UK especially after noticing people's obsession with the fast food instead of eating fresh food .
It was really an urgent need to fill up this issue that affects mostly the children . That's why the British government has taken a leading role to deal with this matter.

Here in London, an increasing number of students spend lots of time at the university so that they can get an access to the facilities offered by the university which includes the catering service.
Talking about the university of London, we have London Metropolitan University which is known for its canteen that offer to students a wide range of food.
The university is trying to improve the services and try to meet the student's need by providing them a warm atmosphere but foremost a good quality of food but the question is how well did the catering service deal with the student's basic need and how are they concerned about the healthy eating of the students.
It is interesting to find out whether they are satisfied or not about the catering service.

Aim

The aim is to know whether the students are satisfied or not about the catering service and what area of improvement the catering service needs to focus on.

Method

The sample size was 28 pre-sessional students of different ages and genders and from different countries. They were all students of London Metropolitan University.

Data collection

This was carried out through the use of a questionnaire. Initially the questions were trialled with a sample of 5 people. A new improved questionnaire was made to investigate the student's point of view about the catering service, and where they had to rank the food in terms of quality, variety and prices and what's their impressions about the dining area as well as the catering's staff.

Findings : How are they satisfied with the catering service

A significant number of international students use the catering service :

28,57% of students use it 2-3 times per week .
17 % of them use it everyday
32,14 % use it once per week.
This could indicate that they fancy going to the canteen and like the service offered by the catering.

The majority of them claimed that the quality of food is fair with 53,57%
A certain number of them said that the quality of food is good.
This could mean that the catering service meet the student's need by providing them a good quality of food.

Many students mentioned that the food prices are affordable with 75% strongly agreeing.
This appear to show that everybody can afford to buy food from the canteen.

46,42% remarked that there is not enough variety of food.
A large number of them insisted that they need a homemade food hat is to say a fresh food .
Some of them want food from their original country such as Spanish omelet, Chinese food...
Here we talk about choices of food which led them to insist on the variety of food.

64,28% of students said that they sometimes spend a long time to be served perhaps this means that there is not enough staff to meet the student's need .

They strongly agreed that the area is clean and the canteen is well ventilated as well as the staff is friendly .
This suggest that , on the whole the catering service pay attention to hygiene and customers .

Findings regarding what the catering service at London Met can do

According to the students , they need more staff to get a fast food so that they don't have to queue .

They also need more places as the canteen is not big enough to accommodate all the students .

They insisted on the fact that the canteen must provide them more choices of food ( they want some variety ) as well as a good quality of food ( it is better to have fresh food / homemade food)

Some of them suggested that the food prices have to be cheaper .

Conclusion

It was obvious that more staff is needed to get a fast service and it is better for students to get a fresh food in terms of healthy eating besides enough variety is essential to attract them .

My secret life

The home I grew up in:

I live in EZZAHRA in the south part of the capital Tunis. I live in a detached house with my parents and my brother. The original name of my city is Saint Germain because lots of French were living there . I love my city ; it's quiter and the people are warm and open minded maybe because of the French influence.

When I was a child I wanted to be a teacher; I used to play the role of teacher with my cousin when I was a child. I forced them to play with me: they were my students and I was the teacher . I really enjoyed that moment eventhough they got bored but they did it for me.

The moment that changed me forever was the death of my uncle: I didn't accept this I was close to him ; he was a brother, a father my best friend. He taught me everything and showed me the way of life and how to respect others. I mean he was really open and intelligent . He believed in me and was sure that I would achieve my dreams. I miss him very much:-((((((((

My greatest inspiration: It is difficult to say ; there are lots of people who inspired me . I can't choose but they have many things in common in terms of perception of life, the high standard of education.....

If I could change one thing about myself : I' d like to stop thinking too much and enjoying every single moment; I'm too perfectionist so I want to do everything in a perfect way.

What I see when I look to the mirror: my hair; I have a naturaly curly hair I like it but I prefer it straight . I used to go to the hairdresser in my country but here in London it is very expensive so I keep it curly.

My style icon : I like Monica Bellucci, she is an Italien actress , a very beautiful woman, she's elegant ; it's quite normal for Italiens . She always wears an elegant clothes and used some accesories and that's what makes her so special. I mean she's not sophisticated at all ; she does not need a make up to be beautiful . She is considered as the world most beautiful woman.

The person who really makes me laugh : well there many person that make me laugh but here in London I would say Hajime : he is funny with a great sense of humour and I found my former classmate Claire very funny too especially when she found a difficulty to speak in English ; she got nervous... Natcho who was my classmate last month is extremely funny especially when he says come on ..... to be continued:-)))

A book that changed me : the bible just kidding it's hard to choose but I would say Maktub by Paulo Cohelo who is a Brazilian writer . I loved his book ; it is like a lesson of life to teach people how to perceive their lives. I love it.

My favourite item clothings : well I like jeans , dresses and short skirts .

You may not know but I'm good at cooking . I used to cook in my hometown . I cook Tunisian , Italien and some French food . I like to cook for my close friends.

If I have time to myself : I go back to my country to see my family and friends and to eat too because I miss Tunisian food.

My house : I live in a residence called St.Dorothy in Hampstead . I don't like the residence but I adore the city . It's very nice but I can't wait to find another place to live.

Movie heaven : Under The Tuscan Sun starring Diane Lane ; it's about hope and how everything is possible in this life . You have to believe in yourself , be positive but foremost never never never give up!

In ten years , I hope to : get married and have kids but I need to find my soulmate . It's hard nowadays but I still believe in it .

My greatest regret : I have no regrets !

My life is : a mixture of love , despair, dream and fun !

Findings regarding what the catering service at London Met can do

Recommendations:

According to the students, they want more staff in order to get a fast service sothat they don't have to queue.

They also suggested that the dining area must be clean: staff should clean the table after each customer.

They need more places to have a sit: the canteen is not big enough to accomodate all the students.

Food prices have to be cheaper.

Choices of food ; they want some variety.

Quality of food; they want a fresh food /homemade food.

They want the staff to pay more attention to higiene and cutomers.

Introducing a self service.

This is my findings concernig our report about the catering service

Quality of food:

The majority of them claim that the quality of food is fair.

Special diet:

Most of them don't need a diet.

Food prices:

They almost think that the food prices are affordable.

Enough variety of food:

I noticed that they don't have an opinion about that .I mean they did not put a comment : it may be that they don't think that there is enough variety of food ;so they disagree.

Add menu:

A large number of students want a homemade food that is to say a fresh food. Some of them want food from their original country uch as Spanish omelette, Chinese food,rice,spagetti.....

Mortage crisis

AWL Gapmaker

After years of flooding Americans with credit card offers and sky-high credit lines, lenders are sharply curtailing both, just as an eroding economy squeezes consumers .

The pullback is affecting even creditworthy consumers and threatens an already beleaguered banking industry with another wave of heavy losses after an era in which it reaped near record gains from the business of easy credit that it helped create .

Lenders wrote off an estimated %2421 billion in bad credit card loans in the first half of 2008 as more borrowers defaulted on their payments. With companies laying off tens of thousands of workers, the industry stands to lose at least another %2455 billion over the next year and a half, analysts say. Currently, the total losses amount to 5.5 percent of credit card debt outstanding, and could surpass the 7.9 percent level reached after the technology bubble burst in 2001.

"If unemployment continues to increase, credit card net charge-offs could exceed historical norms," Gary L. Crittenden, Citigroup's chief financial officer, said.

Faced with sobering conditions, companies that issue MasterCard, Visa and other cards are rushing to stanch the bleeding, even as options once easily tapped by borrowers to pay off card obligations, like home equity lines or the ability to transfer balances to a new card, dry up.

The third unit is sport, we saw many kind of sports with Alex and we had also discovered each sport's equipment . I found this unit really interesting maybe because i love sports especially tennis so i have many things to say about it ; it wasn't the case of Ramona cause she hates sports.

Infact, i used to play tennis and i don't miss any tournament, my favourite player is Marat Safin he is from Russia and is a well known tennis player besides he is cute and a very charismatic person.

We had also talked about other sport that we don't really know quit well such as lacrosse, squash and scuba-diving.

Cambridge people

I went to Cambridge last Sunday with my classmates and I was impressed by its people.

In fact, they are kind, polite and especially warm and helpful . As it was our first time there, we didn't really know so much about the place so we asked some people for help. It was very kind of them because it meant a lot for us to discover the place so as to write a significant information about the city.

I also noticed that they are active and like to enjoy their lives ; they spend most of their time shopping because there are lots of shops to choose from.

Another thing we can stress is that some of them are very creative; they are fond of the arts; for example I saw a group of students making a scary movie.
We saw blood everywhere and some beheaded hands and head. It was similar to the Vampire movie or Dracula. Some of them scared us ; it was quit funny and they let us take a picture with them.

However, we had some difficulties with a man who is responsible for the security in King's college. According to him, only Kings students and staff are allowed to enter the university. We were eager to go there but we felt the gentleman was unnecessarily rude : he refused to let us in . We decided to try another access to the college ; I know it is illegal but it was an urgent need to enter the faculty . I have to say that it was not our day because the other porter was really harsh and impolite so he rejected us, but at least we had tried.

To conclude ,Cambridge people are an easy going bunch and it was a pleasure to meet them, however , be careful of its porter!

The Ady people

I'm gonna focus on the family ties in the Adi tribe and to be honest there is nothing to say about it as the video was focused mostly on the tribe's food, religion and their way of life but through their attitudes and some comments of women we can have an idea about the way they treat each other .

Infact, I noticed that they live together sharing the same tent so they are so close to each other ; women spent their days cleaning, cooking and raising their children and men went to hunt monkeys or rats. It 's quit weird but that's what they eat anyway. I heard a woman claiming that they feel free when their husbands go to hunt, I don't know why maybe because they are under pressure when their men are in home that is to say they are so demanding and pushed them to work harder, it could be so when they leave, they feel a kind of relief and they just wait for them to bring food . The good part is they live in a lovely warming atmosphere; we can feel love , affection and brotherhood.... It is similar to my tribe which is a mixture of tunisian, italian, spanish and french tribes ,thus we're so close to each other. However we don't live in tents so it's quit different from our way of living ;I mean women do not stay in homes waiting for their husbands to bring food and what kind of food rats..... It's absolutely different from us!

What I think about this story

what I liked the most about this story , is the courage of the officer as he risked his own life to save the others ; it is not an easy decision to take I mean he did it because it's his job but what a risk to take especially the guy was holding a knife and was completly insane so I praise this brave officer and people should learn from him I mean we should give a credit to those people who risked their lives to save ours and it is not an easy job at all so well done officer!!!!

The impact of this incident on the residents

Well, I think that everybody was affected by this story cause it is about children's life who were threatenig by a crazy boy so it was an urgent need to deal with that situation and trying to react through the interference of the police and it worked finally.

A fascinating story comes from Cambridge

It's about a brave officer who attacked an 18 year old teenager who was about to kill his family in a Cambourne flat.
Infact, PC Martin Lloyd was honoured for his courage as well as his commitment to his job , eventhough he was in bad condition I mean the guy has a knife and was threatening everybody including children but the officer knew how to deal with him so he used some useful and tactical techniques to stop the boy who was threatening to kill himself and his family so he did face him knowing that he is suffering from mental problems besides he was worried about the children who were in.

The discussion question

It is about a perfectionist teacher who wants to show to her student how to sing in a tough way, though it shows how it is useful to be harsh sometimes in order to give a strong and efficient method of teaching ; I mean in this Zen story, we can notice that the student's teacher was not satisfied with his way of singing so that, she pushed him to sing, to sing and to sing so as to ameliorate his performance and be a professional so it worked finally eventhough he did not get it at first and was complaining about his lack of progress.

Practise makes Perfect

It talks about a music student who was annoyed with his teacher because she asked him to sing the same song. Infact, he had been practising the same song for a month besides the teacher never seemed to be happy with the student`s performance so he became so depressed by his lack of progress the fact that pushed him to travel and trying to forget about his studies. One day he was walking home,he passed a pub and heard a music so he looked inside and noticed that they were having a karoke competition . He decided to enter the competition and he sang the song his teacher had one asked him to practise. When he had finished singing , a famous record producer wanted to speak to him and he praised his performance and could not believe that he was a beginner so he asked about his teacher and today he is considered as the most famous singers in his country.
